Would a mechanical fitness tracker / step counter be possible?

I was on a recent business trip to the civilized world and OMG, EVERYONE was wearing a fitness tracker: some slice of sillycone around their wrist where a proper watch could/should have been. It was just sad.

I can see wearing a fitness tracker, but any reason it needs to be around your prime wrist? Most people have another one (wrist), plus it could go in lots more places.

That said, as for the things the fitness tracker does (heartbeat and step counting) at least the step counting could possibly be done mechanically?

Certain body movements could cause the step counter to advance, giving a general impression of activity level during the day.

Woudl that work? (Both technically as well as a business proposition) ? Would people buy a watch with a mechanical activity complication?
