I would like to hear opinions on the Rolex Explorer II 42mm (Ref 216570 black dial) as a daily do-it-all tool watch. I have another tread on the go seeking advice for a sub-$10k tool watch that is stylish, durable and not too thick (>14mm) and the Explorer II keeps popping up as the best bet.
How do people feel about the Explorer 42mm in terms of style and quality? The point of my thread is to compare this watch to the rest of the market and not within the Rolex brand since it seems like every question about the EXP 42mm eventually circles back to 'You should really consider a Sub" or 'The smaller EXP has nicer proportions' or something else about another Rolex model. I am at the point where the EXP 42mm is the only Rolex on my radar but I am trying to fall in love with the thick hands, bright orange hand and the bold numbers on the bezel, all of which are styling cues that don't immediately appeal to me.
The EXP 42mm seems like a really unique piece within the watch universe in terms or price, size, style and durability and there don't seem to be any lookalike or copycat watches ..but since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (see Sub!) this is somewhat concerning. Is there no love for the EXP 42mm?
